Hello, I'm Shayena! I founded SaniStitch in order to address the issue of poor menstrual hygiene amongst women in rural India. SaniStitch is an economic livelihood initiative that empowers women to make their own reusable menstrual products and encourages open dialogue on the topic of menstruation. This project teaches women how to make reusable sanitary napkins with materials that they already have at home; they are also taught how to sterilize these napkins before reuse. The project addresses menstrual taboos that emerge from societal and cultural beliefs in Indian society.
Through TeenzTalk, I hope to collaborate with other teenagers who are passionate about societal issues and learn more about specific problems from around the world. These problems may not even be featured in the media due to their perceived insignificance. Therefore, there is no better way to learn about an issue than from someone who has dealt with it. As a global teen community, we can increase global awareness on these topics and work to overcome them, using our peers as a source of strength. |
